Lovely boutique hotel atop Pacific Heights sparkles at Christmas

This cozy Pacific Heights hotel is reminiscent of the kind of find you'll stumble across in Europe and just feel fortunate to have found. Later, you'll be debating whether or not to tell your friends - who wants to share such coveted secrets?
A British gentleman this writer met in the lift agreed that it's divine. He and his family seemed very happy, with children milling about cheerfully but respectfully.
Very clean and well-appointed, the historic building boasts enough rooms to accommodate your symphonic contingent, but not so many you'll complain of the chaos. I particularly loved the wine and cheese spread last night, a ritual that would never disappoint. Kudos to the hotel for all of the olive oil samples to douse mini French bread slices in. Staff, especially Julio -- who told me this was his first job! -- are especially attentive.
The room felt very English, much like the (now defunct) Morgan Hotel in Belgravia, London. I especially loved that the windows opened. Nothing worse than the hermetically sealed feel of a chain hotel. Guests want fresh air!
If you are lucky enough to visit this month, enjoy the fragrant fir tree in the restaurant, and tabletops decorated tastefully. A centerpiece boasting mixed nuts is especially striking. Out front, beautiful red wreaths complete the festive look.
The only criticism is a slightly formal feeling, which wouldn't be for everyone. It's not the kind of hotel where one would make a mess and not feel terrible.
But overall, comfy, elegant and very welcoming for the weekend traveller.
