Travel America with each state's favorite Halloween candy
My mom wasn't a candy person, per se, but she did love chocolate and those pink peanut patties she'd get along the road on long childhood trips across Texas.
I, unfortunately, learned to love candy even more at an early age, because my grandmother treated me and my brother on the weekend. Verboten in my mom's kitchen meant we kids were bound to indulge at Grandma's; but what's my excuse at 65? Ah! There are worse addictions!
I was curious about my friends' favorites. Charlotte loves the #1 nationwide pick, according to The Candy Store, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. "I just love chocolate and peanut butter together," she tells me. Sharon likes mini chocolate bars, particularly Thousand Dollar bars.
Nationally, though, America appears to have a soft spot for the sour, specifically Sour Patch Kids, America's most "searched" (as in online) candy, according to Innerbody Research, followed by Skittles, Snickers, Starburst and Twix. I have never eaten a Sour Patch Kid, probably because it sounds weird to bite into a kid. I have eaten Twix, though, as recently as yesterday.
Instacart has also ranked Reese's Peanut Butter Cups as a perennial national topper, while The Candy Store brags sbout M & Ms, leading or tying in my home state of California, along with Washington State, Oregon and Iowa.
Unfortunately, as you moms and dads of little kiddos know, candy prices, particularly chocolate, have soared, as much as 71% over 2021 according to a BBC and other reports. Even so, it's worth every extended credit card and naughty calorie, isn't it? And the least likely to join me? Hawaiians, says Innerbody. Ahhh, who needs all those healthy mango-and-avocado lovers.
Now where's Junior's pillow sack for me to shake free of Twizzlers ...?
